The City of Unley is proud to be the first council in Australia to introduce 40 km/h speed limits across its entire local street network, over 25 years ago, in 1999.
There are many benefits to lowering speed limits from the Australian default speed limit of 50 km/h to 40km/h on all Council-owned roads, with the key benefits being:
Improved road safety for all street users
Improved liveability and amenity
Reduced noise and calmer movements
Improved walking and cycling conditions
Reduced ‘rat-running’ traffic
Council will be pursuing an application to the Department of Infrastructure and Transport this financial year to seek approval to lower the speed limit on the remaining ten Council-owned 50 km/h collector roads to 40 km/h.
To help support the future implementation of this important road safety initiative Council is conducting market research with a representative population of our City.
The survey was developed in partnership with the University of Adelaide's Centre for Automotive Safety Research. An independent consultant McGregor Tan is undertaking the data collection and analysis.
The results of this research will help Council to understand the community's opinions and perspectives about 40km/h speed limits.
