The City of Unley is preparing a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan and would like your feedback.

A Disability Access Inclusion Plan (DAIP) is an important plan that Council will use to improve access to programs, services and facilities that provide people with disability the opportunity to fully participate in all aspects of society.

We want to understand Council’s current position as seen by our community. Your feedback will help us plan for better access and inclusion and establish and remove existing barriers. Our DAIP will firmly drive our short, medium and long term targeted actions that Council can work towards achieving.

In building our DAIP, the City of Unley will align with the State Disability Inclusion Plan Inclusive SA 2019-2023 to ensure it meets its obligations in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2018.

What do we want to know and why?

We want to hear from our community including people living with disability and their carers so that the City of Unley can ensure it provides a more accessible and inclusive community for everyone.

We want to know what is working well, the things that are not working and all about your experiences. We also want to hear your ideas for what could make the City of Unley a better place to for people living with disability. We are passionate about access and inclusion and we want to make sure we understand the things that are important to our community.

This survey is also available in easy read format, hard copy or you can email your feedback directly to Marcia Mudge, Team Leader Community and Cultural Development at mmudge@unley.sa.gov.au or phone Marcia on 8372 5111 to provide verbal feedback.

What will we do with your feedback?

Your feedback will help the City of Unley develop a Disability Action and Inclusion Plan. Council aims to remove existing barriers and make the City of Unley’s buildings, community centres, parks, other amenities, events, programs and activities accessible and inclusive.

What do we mean by access and inclusion?

Access and inclusion makes communities liveable for everyone; this means the ability to move around the community and access facilities, programs and services in an equal and dignified manner. This includes involvement in business, work, education, social and leisure activities.

Access (sometimes referred to as universal access) means that regardless of ability, a person can approach, enter, pass to or from and make use of an area and its facilities, programs and services without assistance.

Whether you live with disability, have family who live with disability, or provide services or care for people who live with disability, we want to hear from you.

In particular (but not limited to), we would like to include the views of the following priority groups:

  • women
  • children
  • people who are Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander
  • people who are culturally and linguistically diverse.

Why do we need to have a Plan?

In accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2018, State authorities must develop and implement a DAIP to include strategies to support people with disability in accordance with guidelines that have been developed. In alignment with the State Disability Plan 'Inclusive SA', areas to address include, but are not limited to:

  • inclusive communities for all
  • leadership and collaboration
  • accessible communities
  • learning and employment.

Planning for disability access and inclusion benefits not only people with disability but also the wider community and councils as organisations and employers.

The Plan will help the City of Unley, its residents and stakeholders to develop an understanding of and respond to the health and wellbeing needs and issues facing our community.

What happens next?

Your feedback will be used to develop our draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan, which will be shared with the community in November 2021 to ensure we have captured and addressed your priorities.
