We are seeking your feedback on our Draft Community Engagement Policy.
The Draft Community Engagement Policy outlines the legislative requirements Council must meet when engaging with the community on decisions that may affect them.
The policy has been prepared to meet new requirements under Section 50A of the Local Government Act and the Community Engagement Charter, which was finalised and published in the South Australian Government Gazette on 11 December 2025.
The Charter replaces previous consultation requirements in the Local Government Act and establishes a consistent statewide approach to community engagement across local government.
To support councils to meet these requirements, the Local Government Association of South Australia (LGA SA) developed a Model Policy for Community Engagement. The City of Unley has used this Model Policy to prepare its Draft Community Engagement Policy under the advice of the LGA SA.
While the policy cannot be materially changed given it reflects the requirements of the legislated Community Engagement Charter, there are still opportunities for shaping:
- How Council communicates about community engagement projects
- How community feedback is provided, considered and shared
- How engagement can be more inclusive and accessible.
