Do have to take part in Going Green in Goodwood?

No, participation in this trial is voluntary. We would love you to join in but understand if you choose not to take part and continue to present your bins as usual. You are welcome to make use of the additional green bin collection on occasional weeks during the trial period.

    Why was this area selected?

A section of Goodwood was selected due to the outstanding commitment by residents through the Take the Pledge campaign, to improve their recycling practices via the YELLOW and GREEN bins. The geographical layout is also helpful for collection vehicles not needing to cross main roads, the tram line, or enter dead end streets.

How is the Going Green in Goodwood trial funded?

This trial has been funded by the City of Unley and Green Industries SA (GISA). GISA’s Council Modernisation Program which assists councils to improve waste management and recycling services through the introduction of innovative measures.

What are the benefits of putting my food scraps into the organics bin, rather than into the blue bin?

Using the GREEN bin instead of the BLUE bin has a direct impact on your family’s carbon footprint and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. You will also:

    • Save space in your weekly BLUE bin.

    • Help reduce the cost of waste management to Council. The cost of composting organics matter is three times cheaper than sending to landfill. This cost saving will see more council funds available for other important community infrastructure and services.

    • Help create valuable compost, and nutrient rich soils for better soil quality and water retention.

I compost most of my food scraps at home – can I still participate in the trial?

Yes, you can. For most households with home compost systems, there are still likely to be some food scraps (like meat, bones, dairy products, even dog poo) that are not recommended for your home compost system. You can place all food scraps in the organics bin, so this collection can complement your existing home system. Contents from your organics bin is commercially composted at very high temperature that kills any pathogens.

I am still concerned about the odour in the organics bin, what can I do?

Reduce potential unpleasant smells in the GREEN bin by containing scraps in compostable bags or wrapping in newspaper. Combining food waste in the GREEN bin with garden vegetation, lawn clippings, even shredded paper, will help absorb moisture and reduce odours. You can also freeze products the day before, that are likely to produce more odours, like seafood, meat scraps and dairy.

If I choose to present my blue bin weekly, with the other bins, how best should I present them?

Place your bin(s) for collection in the same position as usual. Try to keep at least 50cm between the bins, and clear of overhead tree foliage or stobie poles. Remember to bring the bins back into your property within 24 hours after collection.

Will the time of collection of my bins change?

Yes, it is possible that the dedicated trucks for this trial may collect your bins at different times. Please present your bins as normal (on the night before, or before 6.30am) and leave them there for collection.

If your bin is not collected, for some unforeseen reason, please call SOLO on 8159 5059.

My bin is old and split and I’m worried about flies getting in

Contact SOLO on 8159 5059 to arrange for a replacement bin.

Do I need to use compostable bags?

We encourage you to use the compostable bags supplied with your free kitchen caddy starter kit.

Or, you can wrap your food scraps in newspaper, paper towel, or place them loose into the GREEN bin.

I live in a unit and I don’t have my own organics bin

Most unit complexes share their GREEN bins. If residents are placing food in the GREEN bin, please ensure someone at your complex puts the bin out for weekly collection during the trial period.

What happens when the Going Green in Goodwood trial ends?

The trial will end 1 May 2021. We will provide you with results from the trial, whether it be successful or not. You will need to return to the normal fortnightly collection of your GREEN bin after the trial ends. Once the trial ends, we hope that you will continue to maximise the use of your fortnightly GREEN bin service.
