Living Streets Program

Living Streets Program is your opportunity to help make your street safer and greener and bring back local streets.
City of Unley is taking a new approach to bring back our local streets. Creating more innovative open recreational space in non-traditional places and encouraging spaces for people to play and exercise into their daily routines.
There was a time when it was possible to gather with friends, play and meet with your neighbours safely on your local street without feeling vulnerable to traffic. Today, our neighbourhoods are increasingly made up of families as well as retired couples. However, our street no longer provide the common ground for communities, as car dominance outweighs the quality of local places. The Living Street Pilot Program’ is an important tool for the Council to work with local communities to create safer and more enjoyable local street outside their front door.

The new street design includes:- New street trees along the footpath and along the rail line, as well as inserting new garden beds into the roadway, to create a cooler, greener street
- Temporary street art at key junctions along Norman Terrace, and paving bands along the length of the street to alert drivers and slow vehicle speeds
- Restructure the Charles Street intersection to improve the safety and efficiency of Norman Terrace for cyclists
- New garden bed extensions at each intersection to slow turning vehicles and improve pedestrian crossings
- Restructure the Ethel Street intersection to slow turning vehicles and provide better separation for cyclists entering Forestville Reserve
- Collaboration with local primary schools to create art panels to be installed along the tram fence line, inspired by SA Blue gum trees.
To achieve improvements to the presentation and safety of Norman Terrace, the final design will result in the loss of four on-street parking spaces, whilst retaining 14 on-street spaces.
