How did Neighbour Day Begin?

The first Neighbour Day was celebrated in March 2003 in Melbourne, Australia.

Founder Andrew Heslop was moved by the newstory of an elderly woman's death in her home going unnoticed for two years.

Andrew responded to the widespread news of this tragedy by suggesting a "National Check on Your Neighbour Day".

He was also inspired by his experience of having great neighbours who actively supported each other without being intrusive.

Now celebrated annually Australia-wide on the last Sunday every March, the concept has broadened to highlight the value of living within strong, resilient communities.

People and communities choose to participate in many different ways, big or small, because everyone is a neighbour to someone else.
