In 2016, Council undertook community engagement regarding improvements to the Rugby-Porter Bikeway. These improvements were focused on creating a low traffic and low speed bicycle boulevard. In 2017, the first stage was completed (three intersections), and construction will shortly commence to upgrade the remaining four intersections of the project.

The Route

As seen below the route provides an important link between Mitcham, Unley, and the Adelaide CBD. The route can be used by up to 700-800 cyclists per day, which makes it one of the busiest in South Australia.

Intersection Improvements

These upgrades, which have been co-funded by Council and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI), are at the intersections of Rugby Street with Oxford Terrace, Wattle Street, Fisher Street, and Marlborough Street. To accommodate the upgrade, 7 existing trees are required to be removed at Wattle (1) and Fisher (6) Street, however 8 new trees will be planted.

A set of plans and additional explanation of each intersection improvement is provided under Document Library or here.

Construction

Construction has now commenced and each intersection will take approximately three to four weeks to complete. Further details on the construction and traffic restrictions will be provided to residents directly affected by the contractor undertaking the work.
