Tell us what you think about the proposed intersection improvements at Thomas Street and Mornington Road intersection.

Council as part of its 2023-2024 Annual Business Plan and Budget allocated funding to develop concept designs to improve safety and access at Thomas Street and Mornington Road intersection, with a key focus on improving facilities for people walking and bike riding.

This project formed part of Councils Local Area Traffic Management Plan (LATM) for the Unley, Goodwood and Wayville areas developed in 2016. Comments were also raised regarding the need for improvements at this intersection for people walking and bike riding, as part of the development of the City of Unley’s Walking and Cycling Plan 2022-2027, noting this intersection forms part of the north-south neighbourhood bicycle route on Mornington Road, Thomas Street and Barrow Street.

Recent data collection also showed this intersection to experience high levels of pedestrian and bicycle activity with over 450 daily pedestrian movements and 70 daily bicycle movements, with Council’s aim to encourage more people to walk and bike ride within the local community, particularly noting the proximity to the Unley Shopping and Civic precincts.

Council is now seeking your feedback on the proposed intersection improvements that aim to:

  • Separate pedestrian movements from cyclists.
  • Improve sight lines between pedestrians, bike riders and motorists travelling east-west along Thomas Street and north-south along Mornington Road.
  • Provide a wheelchair or pram accessible pedestrian crossing point.
  • Significantly enhance the landscaped area and amenity in the area, to provide a more welcoming space including a place to sit.
  • Have nominal impact to existing trees, on-street parking capacity and bin collection services.
  • Calm traffic along Thomas Street.
  • Increase awareness of the Thomas Street junction with Mornington Road.
  • Provide improved wayfinding and signage.
