What is the background of this project?

In 2009/10, the City of Unley received a grant from the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI, now Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure - DPTI) to deliver a local travel behaviour change project within the City of Unley. Stage 1 of this project was completed in 2010/11 through undertaking research in the Unley community as to their interest in reducing car use, motivation and barriers in doing so, and finding more information as to what initiatives would best target these issues. The outcome of this research was a report outlining the communities real and perceived barriers to sustainable transport options and a series of recommendations for infrastructure improvements and behaviour change programs that could address these barriers.

Stage 2 of this grant is to develop a behaviour change program to address one or more of the barriers identified by the Stage 1 report. Council and DPTI have identified increased use of bikes and other sustainable methods to travel within the City of Unley and to work within Adelaide as a key area to focus on.

What previous consultation has taken place regarding this project?

In 2010/11 research was undertaken in the Unley community as to their interest in reducing car use, motivation and barriers in doing so, and finding more information as to what initiatives would best target these issues. The outcome of this research was a report outlining the communities real and perceived barriers to sustainable transport options and a series of recommendations for infrastructure improvements and behaviour change programs that could address these barriers.

Council has also undertaken surveys on bike riding habits during previous Ride to Work day events. The data collected through these events will also be informing the decision making process for this project.

What are the next steps of this project?

Once the initial survey is completed, a program will be developed to encourage more bike riding within the City of Unley. This may involve a buddy or group riding opportunity for experienced and inexperienced riders and workshops on bike repair/maintenance and riding skills.

The discussion board on this page will be avaialble for residents to particpate in discussions around these programs and the news feature will be used by Council to keep interested residents informed about roadworks and other activities that may impact riding within the Council area.
