Katherine Street – A Local Park for the Fullarton community

24 July 2015

We have commenced the planning for the creation of the Katherine Street Park, and we want you to be involved!

The ambition for Katherine Street Park is to create an open, attractive and accessible open space; a safe and inviting park; and a community meeting place with opportunities for passive recreation, reflection and play. With a strong connectivity to the street network the park will be a key focal point for the local Fullarton community.

The park is an opportunity to demonstrate the many benefits for children and the wider community from exposure to and engagement with nature. The provision of a junior play ground is proposed with a theme of integrating play with nature. Other facilities will provide accessible pathways with seating and shelter for all users, with spaces for contemplation and communal gathering.

The park is also an opportunity to demonstrate best practice urban design by incorporating natural water processes, with a proposed natural swale and interpretative signage. Themes of local history interest and community pride will be considered in the design of furniture and other artistic elements. Other features will include garden beds and tree plantings, with open grass areas for flexible spaces for people.

As the design develops we will keep coming back to the community to ensure the concept reflects the aims of the Fullarton community and the ‘attractive and inviting’ identity of Katherine Street Park.

The development of the local park has been funded jointly by the Council and State government as part of the Minister for Planning’s commitment to provide money for council’s to invest in local reserves and playgrounds.
