Consultation has concluded

Goodwood Main Street will be undergoing a planned streetscape transformation in 2016, and we want you to be involved!

The 2009 Goodwood Precinct Urban Design Framework (UDF) was developed with the local community to identify a range of opportunities to improve the usability, function, character and sustainability of the village. Over the last 5 years Council has worked with government agencies and through local partnerships to implement a range of actions identified in the UDF.

The under-grounding of the powerlines between the tramline and Victoria Street was a long term recommendation that will commence in late 2015. These engineering works provide Council with an opportunity to review the existing condition of Goodwood Main Street with local businesses and the community to plan a new future for the precinct.

The Community Forum was the first step in working with local businesses and the community to improve the presentation and appeal of Goodwood Road. The Concept Plans now available for review reflects feedback from the community during April 2015 regarding the range of opportunities to improve the usability, function, character and sustainability of the village.

As the design develops we will keep coming back to the community to ensure the concept reflects the aims of the community and the ‘alive and vibrant’ identity of Goodwood Road.

The concept design responds to the 2009 Goodwood Precinct Urban Design Framework (UDF) as well as feedback provided by the community during April 2015 regarding the range of opportunities to improve the usability, function, character and sustainability of the village.

From the Community Forum, drop in sessions and online surveys under taken in April, Council received over 100 responses that have been used to inform the design direction. The concept reflects the community's support for the opportunity to undertake a 'Streetscape upgrade and improvements to the pedestrian environment'.

In particular, the community told us the upgrade should:

    • Improve the condition and appearance of paving, to achieve a more open pedestrian setting appropriate to Goodwood's character
    • Improve the quality of lighting along the road and footpaths, as well as maximise opportunities for greater feature lighting of facades and art pieces
    • Increase landscaping/greening across the precinct to improve shade, amenity and influence local speed and road noise
    • Improve the quality of furniture along the street, integrating art into the design and ensuring appropriate locations to avoid the clutter of narrow footpath (including cycle facilities)

    CLOSED: This discussion has concluded.

Council has recently sought community feedback on the original 2009 Urban Design Framework for Goodwood Main Street Precinct. During the 7-11 April, staff hosted daily drop-in sessions on the street, as well as held a community forum on Wednesday 8th April.

These sessions allowed the community to review and provide feedback on the strategic directions of the original document, assess the benefits of the works completed since 2009 (UDF recommendations) and to give Council an understanding of the community’s values and perceptions towards Goodwood in 2015. This has established a shared understanding to be reflected in design proposals that seek solutions to the issues and opportunities identified.

Design ideas will be developed and presented to the community to be tested in an open and iterative process. This is anticipated to occur during May and June, leading to presenting a final design in July.

Thank you to all those who stopped by during the week and shared their ideas, as well as those who took the time to attend the forum or to complete the online surveys.

A summary of feedback received from the community is now available. It can be accessed via the Document Library tab.

The Community Survey will remain open until 5pm 1st May, 2015.

  • Goodwood Precinct Urban Design Framework (2009)

    CLOSED: This discussion has concluded.

City of Unley identified a need to develop a strategic direction for revitalising the Goodwood Road main street precinct, between the tram line crossing in the north and Clifton Street in the south.

Council commissioned the Goodwood Precinct Urban Design Framework (UDF) in February and it was endorsed in August 2009 as the future action plan and vision for the Precinct.

The aim of the UDF was to:

    • Enhance the heritage and culture of the Goodwood Community and its environs
    • Improve safety
    • Promote economic development
    • Attract investment

The UDF proposed the following Guiding Principles:

    • Respect and build on the distinctive "funky and eclectic" (and historic) sense of place of the Goodwood Precinct
    • Enhance the pedestrian environment and ‘tame’ the car
    • Improve access to Goodwood Road – by foot, tram, bus, bicycle and car
    • Animate street level activity – day and night
    • Increase local residential population within the Precinct
    • Strengthen the local economy and services to the community

The UDF was intended to identify an overall framework to direct or co-ordinate future investment and initiatives within the Goodwood Road Precinct. Since 2009, Council has worked with State authorities as well as other local partnerships to undertake a range of short and medium term actions identified in the UDF that have aimed to improve the usability, function, character and sustainability of the Precinct.

The 2009 UDF can be downloaded from the Document Library of the Goodwood Main Street Upgrade 'Yoursay' page.
