Short Term Library Closures - RFID Works

Library staff in the process of replacing barcodes with RFID tags.

The City of Unley’s Libraries are currently in the process of installing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in the Unley and Goodwood branches.

To undertake the necessary RFID infrastructure works, both library branches will be required to close for a short period as there are extensive power and data works involved that will blackout each entire library building for extended periods at a time:

  • Goodwood Library: 2 – 9 May 2016
  • Unley Library: 16 – 29 May 2016

The Library Service as such will not close.

During the RFID infrastructure installation, residents and library members will continue to have access to at least one library branch that has full functionality and full staff complement during standard opening times.

Arrangements are in place to ensure ongoing library services during the short term closures. For more information, click here

  • Your Libraries working better for you

You may have seen a strange looking trolley amongst the shelves over the past few weeks, usually accompanied by staff and a repetitive printing sound. We are feverishly 'tagging' our 76,000 items in preparation for the installation of our new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology next year.

What does this mean? Well, in 2016 we will be getting a new system to check in and check out items that is faster, more reliable, and a lot of fun. Customers will be able to checkout their items five at a time, check the status of their requests and available holds, as well as renewing items - all at the touch of a button. This will allow customers to have a quicker transaction time but also free up staff to help patrons with in-depth requests.

Do you need some reader advisory, have a reference query, or need assistance with printing or photocopying? We'll be around to help! In the meantime, if you see us tagging in the collection, please feel free to say hi!

We are working towards a better library service for you and we are excited about the new possibilities.
