Young Street FAQs Stage 2 (Unley Road to Goerge Street)
- Four new on-street landscaped kerb buildouts on south side of street between Porter Street and George Street.
- 11m² of additional greening with space for up to four new trees (subject to the feasibility of underground services).
- 10 new street print locations featuring road markings (or bicycle symbols) to improve route navigation.
- Minimal parking impact – the loss of one on-street parking space (0.1% reduction to overall parking capacity).
- Traffic volumes on Young Street (between Unley Road and Porter Street) are low traffic with 560 vehicles per day and relatively low vehicle speeds.
- The section between Porter Street and George Street sees even less traffic volumes due to it being a dead-end at George Street.
- Recent works (2023/24) on Young Street (between Unley Road and Porter Street), introduced trees into landscaped kerb builds on the street, making it appropriate to extend this treatment to the next section between Porter Street and George Street.
What changes are proposed for Stage 2?
The concept design includes:
Will driveway access be impacted near the proposed landscaped kerb buildouts?
Driveways will remain accessible for standard vehicles (B85 and B99 check vehicles) from all directions.
The concept design has been developed using a detailed engineering survey in CAD (Computer-Aided Design). Each landscape kerb buildout has been located to ensure it can accommodate B85 (4.9m by 1.87m vehicle) and/or B99 (5.2m by 1.94m) check vehicles entering and exiting adjacent driveways from all directions.
If you are a resident or property owner directly affected by this project and would like to review the driveway access assessments, please contact the Council at (08) 8372 5111 or email pobox1@unley.sa.gov.au.
Will new trees be planted as part of this project?
The concept design includes up to five new trees within the landscaped kerb buildouts.
If underground service constraints prevent tree planting, the buildouts will still include landscaping to improve greenery and cooling.
Why aren’t additional Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) measures, similar to Stage 3, proposed on this section of Young Street?
Additional LATM measures are not considered necessary, given the following conditions:
